West Pelton

Romanian Visit: 20th—27th September 2010

Following a tiring journey after landing at Luton Airport, the group of 13, including leaders met  to discuss the programme for the week.. A full week of activities was agreed as follows:

Tuesday 21st September

Assembly at Fatfield Primary School

Visit to The People’s Kitchen in Newcastle

Wednesday 22nd September

 Biddick Sports College

Thursday 23rd September

Ouston St Benets & Chester-le-St C of E Primary Schools

Roseberry Sports College

Friday 24th September

Chester-le-Street C of E & West Pelton Primary School

Red House Academy in Sunderland

Visits to schools involved speaking to whole school groups as well as individual classes. about a range of topics including customs, language, national costume, dancing, singing, geography as well as testimonies. Close relationships were formed with younger pupils and a visit to Red  House Academy (left) resulted in talking to 60 students on a Friday afternoon—no mean feat but one which the group  passed with flying  colours!

A visit to ‘The People’s Kitchen’ in Newcastle fascinated the group as they saw work with underprivileged people in action. Throughout the week, the young people stayed in houses of church members and were fed each evening by individual churches. There is no question that they returned to Romania considerably heavier than when they arrived!

Activities in churches were varied from leading worship, contributing to ‘Back to Church’ Sunday and taking part in an evening for youth. An evening at West Pelton Methodist Church (see below) saw the young people play ‘Beetle Drive’ for the first time and lead a time of worship—an unforgettable experience for young and old alike!

What little spare time they had was mostly spent at the Metro Centre or Washington Galleries.
How they managed to transport all their purchase back home was, indeed, a miracle. In addition, hosts treated the group to the delights of the north east coastline and the ‘Angel of the North’ was a fascination to them all

A barbecue at St Paul’s Church rounded off a wonderful week where our young visitors made a lasting impression with their Christian commitment, enthusiasm and friendliness.
